Environmental variation in sex ratios and sexual dimorphism in three wind‐pollinated dioecious plant species

چکیده

Variation in plant sex ratios is often attributable to sex-specific mortality heterogeneous environments that differentially limit male and female reproduction. Yet sexual dimorphism plastic responses environmental heterogeneity are common may co-vary with variation ratios. Here, we show the ratio degree of for a number traits varied along climatic elevation gradients three wind-pollinated dioecious species, Rumex lunaria, Urtica dioica Salix helvetica. Some observed consistent greater sensitivity females water scarcity, but most rather point males ecological stress, larger reproductive effort, as has been commonly reported plants. In contrast, found no evidence either or expected under selection. Interestingly, both distinct same axes variation, suggesting evolution measured was not sufficient prevent mortality.

Prenatal sex ratios influence sexual dimorphism in a reptile.

The prenatal environment influences offspring traits in a variety of ways and in a wide range of taxa. For example, maternal allocation of steroids to the eggs influences offspring traits in birds, and in some mammals the intrauterine position influences morphological, behavioural, and physiological traits due to sex-related steroid transfer between sibling fetuses. We show that similar phenome...

Environmental influence on primary sex ratio in a dioecious plant.

The proximity of mates can influence mating opportunities and the quantity and quality of offspring, especially in dioecious plant species. Progeny sex ratios modulated by environmental conditions is one of the most radical ways in which offspring quality may be influenced, yet it has rarely been reported in plants. A mechanism proposed to influence progeny sex ratios in dioecious plants involv...

Sex-specific selection and intraspecific variation in sexual size dimorphism.

Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is thought to evolve due to sex differences in selection on body size, but it is largely unknown whether intraspecific variation in SSD reflects differences in sex-specific selection among populations. We addressed this question by comparing viability selection between two island populations of the brown anole lizard (Anolis sagrei) that differ in the magnitude of m...

Fungal Infection Induces Sex-Specific Transcriptional Changes and Alters Sexual Dimorphism in the Dioecious Plant Silene latifolia

Sexual dimorphism, including differences in morphology, behavior and physiology between females and males, is widespread in animals and plants and is shaped by gene expression differences between the sexes. Such expression differences may also underlie sex-specific responses of hosts to pathogen infections, most notably when pathogens induce partial sex reversal in infected hosts. The genetic c...

Worldwide variation in life-span sexual dimorphism and sex-specific environmental mortality rates.

In all human populations mean life span of women generally exceeds that of men, but the extent of this sexual dimorphism varies across different regions of the world. Our purpose here is to study, using global demographic and environmental data, the general tendency of this variation and local deviations from it. We used data on male and female life history traits and environmental conditions f...
